Tate's Sticker Design

Amanda from Tate's Comics came to me and requested a sticker commission. She had me do the design based on a previous sketch I did, and she requested I modify the characters to be Falkor from The NeverEnding Story with a chibi Tate riding his back. Below is the original sketch, the final commission, and the final sticker design. You can find them in the sticker machine at the main headquarters!

Art Collab with Andrew G

These past few days, I've been working on the first half of an art trade with my friend Andrew Glowczewski. We each picked three things (I picked girl, dragon, and cheese. He picked gun, powdered donut, and bird). Then we both drew a piece using the final six things all together. We swapped pieces, and now we each have two weeks to color. We're going to swap again when we're done. His piece is wicked! I can't wait to color it!

Above is the process I used for my piece. I drew a small thumbnail first (it was way smaller than the preview, about 2'' in width on paper). I brought the thumbnail into Photoshop and scaled it up to fit a US Letter paper sized canvas. I lightly sketched on a separate layer a quick blue rough outline. Then, on another layer, I did the final "inking." I'll admit, it took me longer than anticipated! But I can't say I've ever attempted it before, so I'm happy with the outcome. I hope I do more, and I hope I get faster at digitally inking. If anybody wants to color it, feel free! Please give me credit though!

Skeleton Torso Studies

Checked out the book Art of Anatomy by David Sanmiguel from my local library. I need to refresh my memory of the skeleton and muscles. This weekend, I decided to start with the torso. The first sketch, I'm not entirely fond of, but anything helps, I guess! :)

Doodle Butts

So I created a new Tumblr blog called Doodle Butts. YEAH. I'm uploading random doodles I draw on 3x3 Post-it Notes. I try to do at least two a day. I also try not to use pencil to sketch anything first, and jump straight to pen (though there have been a few exceptions to this already). It's a very relaxing exercise, and I go with the flow of whatever comes out. I had the Post-it's sitting in my cubicle from an event at work, and they weren't being used much prior to the spawn of this obsession. They make a GREAT canvas, and super colorful too! The style I'm using is called "Farmers Market" and I'm anxious to grab up some of the other color themes once I run through the pads I have.

Freelance & Personal Goals

Oh, how busy I have been! This past year, I did a very quick freelance job for a neighbor of a former co-worker. The neighbor had written a children's book (or may currently still be writing; it wasn't quite complete when I started work for her) and requested my help. I did a few simple illustrations to highlight the pages here and there, as well as a cover page. (click here to view my portfolio and see all of the work I did for the book).

Last year around October, I signed up to participate in this cool thing called The Sketchbook Project 2012. I failed miserably, and didn't complete the whole sketchbook *cries*... But, alas! I again challenged myself to participate in The Sketchbook Project: Limited Edition... aaand, yet again, as the deadline draws nearer (April 30), I still have quite a few blank pages to fill, and about a week to turn it in. Yeesh. I will not give up hope! There's still time to finish!

My theme for the current Sketchbook Project is "How to Spell and Other Things to Learn" so I thought it would be an interesting idea to pick a word at random for each letter of the alphabet and draw an illustration according to the word. So far, I've picked "Aurora Borealis" and "Beach."

Currently, I'm feverishly trying to pump out some freelance work for a client that has been significantly patient with me. I can't show anybody anything yet, and I'm hesitant to even speak of it, but it's a pretty hefty project (partly why I've procrastinated on it for so long on it; it's so daunting of a task). I know that the work I'm producing for the project is some of the best work I've ever done and can't wait for the whole thing to be complete. I'm aiming to have the project done by the end of the year, and brought on CanOfToast to assist me. That's about all I can say! :)

Otherwise,

I've given myself two goals to chip away at in my spare time:

• Fill up sketchbooks
• Work on and complete
  all unfinished digital artwork

There's not much else to say, more updates to come soon!
